Aim:
If you feel your next course could be more thoughtfully designed, more engaging for students, and better suited to supporting deep learning, this Basic Training in Teaching course offers you the opportunity to develop your teaching practice through a learner-centered approach and to design your next semester’s course from start to finish. In the program, you’ll gain practical tools for supporting learning, making sense of assessment, and using digital tools, through participation, you’ll reflect on yourself as both a learner and a faculty member and exchange experiences with colleagues. Learning in the course is collaborative, which supports deeper understanding and professional development.
Content
Introduction to Basic Training. Adjusting to University Life – getting acquainted, identifying participants’ needs, agreements, the learning environment, the course curriculum, organization and campus tour.
Learner-centered learning and teaching – principles of learner-centered teaching, ethics and best practices in the learning process, the professional identity of the faculty.
Setting and planning learning objectives – learners’ needs, goal setting, course program design, including curriculum coherence.
Assessment and feedback that support learning – learning outcomes, assessment methods and criteria, giving and receiving feedback, including observation.
Creating a learning environment that facilitates learning – creating a safe learning space, intercultural learning, group processes, faculty communication and role.
How does learning take place? – neurobiology, conscious learning, motivation.
Understanding and Developing Learning – reflection, learning and reflection methods, analysis of activities.
Sharing and celebrating learning outcomes – presenting course programs, summarizing and celebrating basic training.
